Good Read - No one knows how we will handle this football thing, which is one of the reasons it is so exciting! Anyhow, you make some good points and I enjoyed reading about our program as viewed by an opposing teams fan base. Best of luck this year!

UNCC will land somewhere in between ODU and GaSt as far as initial success (or lack thereof) goes. They have a lot more in common with Georgia State culturally.

Good and fair analysis regarding UNCC. Any App fan who casually dismisses them is making a big mistake.

Thank you T-Dog. That was one of the most honest and fair analysis I've seen of us. It's nice to have some discussion about actual football instead of the traditional jabs back and forth. You guys got a steal with that sports writer. Nathan Butler is a great kid, with a great head on his shoulders.

Well done fair summary. Judy and Phil did not want football and I think that is well known. Neither did the large state universities in both NC and SC. I always said the potential was unlimited here ( I live in Charlotte)in our urban setting. The potential for an incredible rivalry between Charlotte and APP is here also and again we have to overcome Judy's bias that we are beneath Charlotte. I think Charlottes' move forced us to move quicker than our Chancellor wanted to who wanted a regional conference. Maybe one day but for now the SunBelt is it and we need to prove we can compete.

Ironic, App didn't want another football program in NC the size of UNCC, but for the fans wanting to join the FBS ranks it may have been the item that tipped the scale.

Same thing for GSU with GA St.

We should play UNCC in basketball and baseball every year and at a minimum every other year in football. Makes a lot of cents.

Very solid write up. You make a great point about all of the additional scholarships that will be added to FBS. Recruiting will definitely be tougher but it also a great chance for Charlotte, App, and ODU to eat into the depth of schools of ACC.

Mountaineers spokesman Mike Flynn told me Monday that Appalachian athletics director Charlie Cobb and football coach Scott Satterfield would love to play Charlotte and that 2014 wouldn't be too soon.


"Down the road, we will play them," said Rose. "We’re in discussions with them. They’d like it to be a longer-team arrangement, and we’re not willing to do that, because we just don’t know what our conference schedules are going to be like. We’ve got to be careful in how far out we schedule."

Makes sense to me for the most part. I want no part of App until we have our feet under us. I also am sure that any OOC teams App can lock into long term agreements with would be great since it is a little more difficult to get to Boone and for us that isn't a big deal.

The odd line for me is Judy talking about how conference schedules could change? I don't get that, unless she is bracing for some more movement above us.

Ha, imagine that!

This series makes too much sense not to happen. Easy bus trip for the teams, fans on both sides would show up in big numbers and a regular series would make OOC scheduling so much easier for a couple schools who have enough travel to worry about already.

Make it happen. If Judy insists on short-term, sign a home-and-home. When she sees all the benefits first-hand, a long-term renewal should be an easy sell.

So UNCC now has an opening in 2014 and 2015, but Judy doesn't want to get a deal done? Why not a home and home (Boone in 2014 and Charlotte in 2015) for those two years to start? Not wanting to play App yet due to being a startup would make sense except you had an ODU team that went to back to back playoff births scheduled. Plus you better get those young guys prepared for good competition before CUSA comes calling in 2015. Maybe UNCC is scared of the negative impact two lopsided losses could have on their recruiting, but I would imagine a recruit that wanted to go to UNCC would understand there will be growing pains for a new team.

Many of our fans don't mind playing you guys. I prefer not to until we are on equal footing. IMO our roster is too young. Yes, we had ODU on the schedule, but we won't/don't compete against them the way we do with App. I am all for starting things up - but not until we both have an equal shot. I know you all want to get a shot in on us before we are at full power and I understand that.

As for going to Boone - we just lost the big him game on our schedule in 2014. If we are going to replace it with a road game, that we will most likely lose - it better be for some cash somewhere.
