12k when I was a freshman, that’s undergrad and grad. That’s insane growth in 25 years

Same goes for me 27 years ago. Didn't think it was crowded on a daily basis, has to seem that way now.

100 years ago in 1970 we had 6k…..2lane roads to civilization, a dry city and a gravel stadium lot. I won’t bore you with the other prehistoric revelations.

Was still only 2 lanes when I started as well. Miss the old 2 lane road except when the 18-wheeler was on your side around a curve.

Growth to an extent is good. To many "high rise" style mixed use facilities now IMO. The one closest to Holmes that is the largest has virtually no tenants in the retail section. Probably due to rent costs, or other factors. That one as a whole is an eye sore that should have been one story less in height.

Also, the university, IMO, should've purchased the property the neighboring Hardees was on. Once purchased built a parking deck, practice facility, office space, etc. and either connect to Holmes by closing off that small section of road or a pedestrian bridge if not possible to remove the road.

Not going to slow down. We are almost at a point in the business of college where if you are not growing, you are dying.

Just make admissions more difficult and don't have to increase total enrollment.

I for one am glad to see the growth in both the campus size and student size.

Seems like a low number for Hickory. Not sure what we were expecting there.

Right at 10,000 in '86 and best I can tell the area is still the same size. Even though we have a son here it's too many kids

Actually thought online may be more. One person in my current online MBA class has done 3 years of their undergrad and doing the accelerated masters now and has only been on campus once the whole time.

That only works if you’re trying to limit growth. Which the UNC system doesn’t want to do (more accurately they want controlled growth to targets). It’s already much harder to get into App that it was even 10 years ago. Standards are well above what they used to be and App has taken a step up from many of its peers in the UNC system.

The UNC system needs growth to continue making money. And as a public school, App can’t just raise tuition by a significant amount to continue bringing in revenue. It needs growth. Being more selective doesn’t do that.

I thought it was low as well. I wouldn’t think it’s sustainable at that level.

I read an email a few days ago that UNCG was 17,000 and some change maybe 17,300. This was the largest freshman class since Covid and they were happy for that but I think UNCG peaked at 20,000 and some change in 2018 and about 86% or so of peak student numbers now is a drop.

That is a big drop and I will take a crowded App State over what UNCG has any day. Lots of jobs cut and salaries being lowered those not at the top (words said to me today even.)
