Is it time to reboot?

Crazy and unprecedented times is an understatement. With all of the uncertainty surrounding life, much less sports I ask this question- is it time to reboot a lot of stuff that is out of control? I narrow this down to major college athletics. Has the money aspect put the whole thing in a position where the model might be in jeopardy of collapsing? I certainly hope not but you have to wonder. Can App State football survive playing games in an empty KBS? Can the athletic department afford to send teams to far reaching conference schools? I heard DG interviewed the other day and he obviously didn’t have the answers to very difficult questions but it sounded like the general tone kept going back to one major theme- regionalism of games to save money. Could all of the changes we will possibly face force realignment of conferences to reduce cost? Will the astronomic salaries and other out of control costs come back down to earth? The bigger question- can schools like App survive without the huge gate revenue?

No business can survive without revenue and cash flow.
The economic damage of this thing shouldn’t be underestimated.

It’ll force chancellors, presidents, and ADs to the table, but will it force change. People fear change especially when you’ve got money involved. How do you navigate the legal waters of breaking up conferences and blowing up existing commitments. How do you get 26 schools (just in the SBC and CUSA) to go along with it? There will undoubtedly be those who dig their heels in. The NCAA doesn’t have the power to dissolve and reform leagues. It’s not that easy.

Key thing right now for any non profit with a donor base (cough yc cough) or program that’s in hiatus, it to keep engaging their constituents and participants/donors. My boss had me make calls to my people with no goal in mind other than to see how people were doing and to ensure we are doing everything we can remotely. They do not want us to cancel meetings but to be flexible to see how we can run a normal as possible remotely. I still have my goals and work with my volunteers to come up with new ways to hit them. The problem is that the less we work with people now the harder it will be to reengage them this summer/fall.
Now as to the schools and revenue, what revenue losses are we expecting. Ticket sales and media losses should be minimal because it was spring sports. I bleed back and gold but we arnt talking football with 1000s of tickets and Gameday ad revenue. I would assume fewer the operating expenses would make up the difference/put them in the black until the fall. I would hope/ assume the school and the sunbelt have disaster insurance to help in this situation. The biggest kicker would be the refunding of 1/3 of the budget from student fees but I’m unaware of what the school is refunding and what they are not.
Overall I would assume unless massive refunds have been issued, that the lower operating expenses and some sort of insurance would keep everything afloat and stable. Money for existing capital projects is separate from operating expenses and life goes on. They should use this as an opportunity to prove to the school and potential new conference mates that we are a financially stable as a rock and we’ll be ready to go in the fall.
Edit: Remember to go look at our revenue sources. Only $3.4 million out of $36 million was ticket revenue In 18. I understand where there would be other revenue losses if there wasn’t a game day but you also have to look at the lower expenses as well.

The Greensboro paper had an interview with Doug in yesterday or this morning's paper. It was likely a pick-up from the W-S paper. If no one posts a link I'll dig for it later this evening. I have to get to some yard work now.

You know the Greensboro and W S papers are now sister publications, right? One of the members of this board works for them.

Short answer, yes I knew. Long answer-every BH Media paper in the state or at least between Greesnboro and Morganton is now printed at the W-S's new-ish press just off Salem Parkway.

Conference realignment to reduce travel costs, travel time, and increase visiting teams fan attendance to away games has got to be coming soon. The NCAA and existing conferences have got to face the reality of our new world which is conferences based upon geography. Get them as close as you can to each other, it will be better for everybody.

I don’t believe that any sweeping change scenarios should be dismissed. When I used reboot I tried to think of another descriptive term. I am by no means a socialist but we all know that college athletics has long since gotten completely out of control. The amount of money flowing is insane as are the salaries for coaches. We are already seeing schools possibly reducing the number of sports, games played and even coaching salaries. At this point nothing is beyond the realm of possibility. Are 70,000 people going to cram into a stadium on the first of September if we get the go ahead to “return to normalcy”? Will it even be allowed?

Olympic sports are going to take it on the chin. Bus rides to Texas , among other places ,are going to be rough. SB and CUSA need to be negotiating now.
