Assuming
(I know how dangerous is to assume anything in realignment speak) that we aren't getting jerked around again by anonymous, evil pundits who get their thrills by pushing our buttons, then some decisions are going to have to be made in Charlie Cobb's office suite.
What decisions, you ask? Well, the SBC doesn't have men's soccer, wrestling, or field hockey. ASU does! ASU doesn't have women's swimming and diving. The SBC does!
And for the two or three guys who care, no, the SBC
doesn't have ice hockey.
Will some sports become casualties of football's success? Will we add women's swimming and diving? If my understanding is correct, we don't have an Olympic pool on campus with enough lanes for official competition. Will we seek other conference affiliation for a few of our Olympic sports that the SBC can't accommodate? Will our field hockey program be held harmless since it already has a working conference affiliation?
A lot of details have to be worked out! Decisions...decisions. Maybe!

As I understand it Ice Hockey is a club sport and should not be affected by any conference changes.

Field Hockey already competes in the NorPac Conference, so I'd assume we will keep it. I seriously doubt we would cut any women's sport due to Title IX. As for wrestling and soccer, there's hope in that both may be able to stay in the SoCon as the SoCon doesn't have full representation in these two sports. We shall see though.

I agree, we should be able to keep those sports in the SoCon. We've been open in our desire to move up to FBS with the SoCon. I believe we are on friendly terms and the SoCon needs teams in those sports. The SoCon has only 8 teams in soccer and C of C is leaving, of the 8 wrestling teams in the SoCon 4 are affiliates already so I don't see that as a problem either. It would be the SoCon cutting their nose off to spite its face to not allow us to keep our soccer and wrestling there, assuming that's what we want.

Drop soccer?
Besides being one of the fastest growing sport in America, it was our first sport to achieve National attention that I can remember. AppState owned soccer in the 70's and early 80's. To bad they didn't give it the necessary funding and turned it over to UNCC and UNC.

Maybe our replacements will have those sports. Maybe they don't care what we want. Maybe they will do just fine without us.

It is inevitable we will drop some sports. I think any reasonable thinking person can see ASU has been maxed out for years. Back in the day it was fashionable to have a broad based athletic program but at our level that isn't possible now, especially considering the pressure being put on budgets by state cuts. It is a given some will be upset, but we have to do what is best for ASU athletics long term.

Doubtful our replacement has wrestling - and if they do - they may already be an affiliate member as Campbell, G-W and VMI are in SoCon Wrestling. Soccer may be a different story.
That said - with this happening, and GMU leaving CAA, wouldn't be surprised to see Davidson looking for a way out and join that league. That's another wrestling/soccer team out.
My preference would be to upgrade those Men's sports by reaching out to CAA, which I believe is stronger in both. They're losing wrestling and soccer with GMU and ODU, and lost soccer with VCU. Might even help us in Field Hockey, no?

ASU soccer was successful in the mid 70's through early 80's because Vaughn Christian figured out he could recruit foreign players and have their scholarship paid by grants from the government. He passed that on to Hank Steinbrecher. Once that program went away we saw a dramatic drop in our success. You might say ASU did not build off the success of those teams but the reality is the Yosef Club was bringing in around $200,000 annually at that time and couldn't replace the funds.

I know, I know. There are a handful of soccer fans, so I'll spare you my "Soccer is the Death of America" speech. While I was in school, I did discover that a soccer match was a good place to go study if your roommates were partying. No one was there and it was very quiet. Got ready for a few exams that way and was never distracted by what was happening on the field.

Well, if last night's game was any indication how could you be distracted during a 0-0 tie.

I could very well be wrong, but I think we have maybe burned our bridges with the SoCon.

An interesting fact about, Coach Christian, he never played college soccer. At least that was in the press releases at that time.

Pool was "moved" to the SRC. The pool has room for swimming but no diving area and no stands. Plus you would have to deal with Joe and Eddie in UREC.

You evidently weren't around during the Vaughn Christian era or you wouldn't have felt that way. Ask asu66.
