After chewing on this a little while and gathering info from several sources I've come to the conclusion this could turn out good for ASU.

As is in all things, money is the motivation of the conference merry-go-round. Most notably the money associated with the non-BCS lone playoff spot. The AAC has acquired the programs they believe gives them the best shot at being that guy. Going to 16 teams CUSA is trying to keep their odds high with sheer numbers. It makes sense the AAC responds to this by poaching 4 of the better programs left in CUSA (prob So Miss, Marshall, UTEP, La Tech). The question for CUSA is who do they turn to to fill those slots? Do successful programs or TV markets give them the better chance at the playoff spot?

Who are the candidates? UL Lafayette appears to be the only slam dunk. Ark State's fans think they are but their AD said, quite bluntly, with a $13 million budget they are in no position to go anywhere. Ga State - terrible record and support. Ga Southern - possible but has a long way to with facilities and they don't have a lot of funding. UL Monroe - 2012 was 1st winning season since the 1990's. Texas State - 2 winning seasons (none in last 3 years) since playoff run in '05. Troy - definite possibility. S Alabama - only had a program 5 years. Hard to think NMSU & Idaho would be in the mix. IMO that puts App in a great situation for CUSA.

Fish - This makes sense to me. The other conference that no one is talking about is the MAC. If CUSA and the AAC move to 16 teams, their is a lot of room for growth in the MAC which could be a landing spot for App down the road if the Sun Belt begins to crumble. To reiterate what many other folks have said previously, we now have a spot at the big boys table. We now have many more options going forward as long as we can show success on the field. Realignment is going to be a fluid situation for the next 5 years and we are in a better position with our membership into FBS.

I could possibly see CUSA reconsidering adding App so UNCC has a closer rival and a traveling partner. Do I think we should bail on the SBC? No. Do I think we will? Probably not. Do I think we'll get the opportunity to? Maybe.

We all knew there would be more changes in FBS so none of us should be surprised by this info from CUSA. All signs point towards JMU being at least a year away from making a move, and CUSA needs to reinforce its West Division so the Dukes should still be a likely addition for the Belt. As Moose says all the time the movement at the top still isn't completely over so no matter what CUSA does at this point it will likely change again in the near future.

The main thing is that we are now part of the FBS puzzle and with that our options for finding the best fit are now much greater. The best fit may continue to be the Sub Belt or it could be another conference depending on how things change. No matter where we end up it will be better than the SoCon.

It might have already been brought up, but I didn't see it when skimming the thread..

Marshall was 54-11 in the first 5 years of moving up. It wasn't the move up that hurt them - it was the recruiting violations and NCAA sanctions that killed that program.

This is JMU's dream and why they were holding out. It will be a slap in the face to us if they get in because Harrisonburg isn't exactly a large TV market. If location and rivals were in play all the time then we should have got an invite first. If they go by their previous direction then Ark State and ULL would be more likely because they are already FBS but the big worry is the WKU is/was not a large TV market by any stretch and they took them. Shows a willingness to change. Anyway you cut it it's not good for us right now. In a few years things will change but this will just make it harder on us in the short term (5 years or so). Not exactly what we wanted to hear.

This is assuming CUSA even goes to 16, which I rate as 40% chance. WKU metro area is 163k, so not small but not large... what they do bring is a long time rival to MTSU and help improve the chances of getting eyeballs in Nashville.

But let's not forget: CUSA has been losing and back filling just like everyone else. This revelation of considering 16 gets people thinking that CUSA is the aggressor, and we have all bought it hook, line and sinker.
