We are in need of someone to take over the maintenance of the MMB. Yosef has done it for a long time, and we are grateful for all he has done, but life happens and he no longer has the time to devote to its upkeep. If anyone here is interested in helping to keep the board running, please let me know via DM.

Playoffs

I miss this and no I'm not sorry for it. We definitely made the right decision on the move and I love the Sun Belt but the bowl system is just not the same. The best any G5 can hope for is to play in the access slot. Not too shabby I agree but never will you see a G5 in a 4 team "playoff" although I know it is theoretically possible. Can you imagine if FBS did it like a real 24 team playoff. Then yes everyone has a shot to be NC. Hell even 8 teams might drop the bar low enough for a G5. But this 4 team thing although better than the sham they had before is still for the haves.
Having said that I hope to be at our first bowl game because it is certainly a great accomplishment for a great team and I am looking forward to being in the access conversation.

Re: Playoffs
It's amazing we are heading to a bowl in the first year of being eligible. Me and my klan will be there. My fear is that this novelty will fade. The Cure, GoDaddy, etc. bowls will surely lose some of its luster over time. I admit that I miss the playoffs. Clearly, It is a much better and more exciting system. The seedings, homefield, matchups, following who advances, the stakes being higher, etc. And a big difference is that in a low tier bowl, only the fans of the teams playing will care, while in the playoffs the fans of all teams in the playoffs are watching, and many outside the playoffs.
I'm excited that we are going bowling because we're doing well in the system we live in, but the bowl system is an arcane relic that should die, and it would except that teams pay big bucks for unsold tickets to keep it viable. I just read that we may have up to FIVE 5-7 teams playing in bowls this year. It simply doesn't mean as much when everyone can do it. The addition of the conference championship game will be nice. It will be more meaningful, and a more difficult accomplishment to boast about.

Re: Playoffs
As someone who has gone to bowls his whole life, you will like them more than you think. Great experience for the kids who play, an opportunity to go against a new opponent in a new city and have fun, exposure and a chance to go out on a high note. I loved the playoffs, but I really feel ASU became complacent and needed a new challenge. Our end goal now is to win conference championships, go to bowl games, access bowl game, be ranked and potentially one day move up to a bigger conference. Only 2 true football schools in the state, I like where we are going.

Re: Playoffs
24 teams would be way too many for the playoffs IMO. I think four is pretty good, as it still keeps the regular season as high-priority. Eight would be fine too.
Ultimately, if you wanted to kind of combine the football and basketball models, you could go to 16 teams, with auto bids for all 10 conferences plus six at large. Doubt it will ever happen as we all know the P5 aren't looking for ways to share more of the pie, but it would be pretty cool.

Re: Playoffs
In a 24 team playoff at this level we wouldn't stand a chance of winning a NC any more than we do right now. We would still have to get past teams that so far we haven't shown any ability to beat. Conference championships and bowl games are what we play for now. And don't take this as a view opposed to our move up because I'm not. I was and still am a huge proponent of the move. I just think that's our reality for now and we might as well get used to it. An access bowl slot might someday be a reality. Heck, if we win against state this season we might have been in the conversation. It's just gonna take some time but I think by all accounts, we're ahead of schedule.appbio91 wrote:http://www.sbnation.com/college-footbal ... -streaming

Re: Playoffs
I have always been a proponent of this or a variation of it. Essentially a 20 team playoff (would have to work in byes or add a number of at-large teams). Yes, it sounds like a lot and unreasonable at first, but I think it would work without adding much to the schedule. The way to do it is make the 1st round of the playoffs the conference championship games. Would require all FBS conferences to hold a CCG and this keeps the importance on the regular season without watering it down.EastHallApp wrote:24 teams would be way too many for the playoffs IMO. This also makes it a legit playoff, rather than playing for a playoff "Access" bowl to nowhere.

Re: Playoffs
I tried not to come off too negative because I really did enjoy this season and I agree we are way ahead of schedule. I agree still very little chance we win an NC even in an expanded field but at least you play for the big prize. It will be better when hopefully the Sun Belt can have a conference championship game followed by a trip to a bowl. I really am not thrilled with our tie ins though. It's like outside of NO and Go Daddy these things were just created for 6 win teams. I think at least you should have a winning record to qualify. Easy for me to say this year as we stare down 10 wins

Re: RE: Re: Playoffs
To me that is fair. That says I am one of the best in the country and even if I go out in the first round I was here. Lots go home with no post season in the scenario but at least it is real post season instead of just another game.mountaineerman wrote:Some one mentioned the other day take conference champion from each conference and two at large that way notre dame is happy problem solved.
Not minimizing our experience this year at all, still very excited.

Re: Playoffs
I also miss the playoff part of where we used to be. We certainly had some exciting games like the Furman and JMU playoff games (I hope I recall the right ones that came down to the wire). Even the championships (in Chatty) were cool. Even though I never had a chance to go I was glued to my TV each of the winning seasons. That being said I would never want to go back. Once the title game was moved to Frisco, TX- never even heard of that city and I am over 50 and somewhat knowledgeable of US geography. I don't think we will ever see a really expanded playoff system that is upwards of 20 or so teams. If you try to put together a format like that this year with the "top 20" or with conference champions it will look really watered down and there would be first round blowouts.
I had always thought that the ideal playoff format for the FBS would be to play the traditional 4 big bowl games as the quarterfinals (seeded with 1 v 8, etc). These bowls could take the 5 P5 conference champions, 2 P5 wild cards and 1 G5 entrant.
