GSU Future Opponents

According to athletics director Tom Kleinlein, "GSU is on the brink of signing non-conference games with North Carolina State, Navy and Georgia Tech for the 2014 season — and suddenly Eagle football hardly seems like the program that once brought a milk jug filled with Eagle Creek water to playoff games."

And you can expect App's future schedule to include similar opponents. Perhaps then, we won't keep hearing all the whining about not being able to drive to Spartanburg, Burlington, and Cutaweed for conference games.

I would hope we would begin to hear some news on that front soon.

I doubt CC will announce an "on the brink of" situation. I think he will wait until the contracts are signed, as he should.

I wonder if we will still play at McNeese State in 2014 since we will be FBS. I read that Ga State has a contract to play at Chattanooga in 2014 but may buy out of the contract. Anyone know what the SB's policy is for playing at an FCS team?

I'm guessing none of those games are home games.

Not that it matters, though. All three are better games than NCCU and LR.

And all three are likely to be losses for GSU at that point as well.

GSU could definitely beat Navy and GT by then. MTSU knocked of GT in Atlanta last year, and Navy is coming off a pretty bad year themselves.

Only time will tell (if it even comes true). All I know is you could not pay me to watch a GSU vs Navy and/or Georgia Tech game. Two triple option teams squaring off in the High School Bowl - the most boring game ever played in the history of football.

It won't be the least bit boring for the fans of the two schools involved. I can easily understand why GSU fans are excited about all three of those potential games.

Certainly might be the shortest games in FBS that year as there is a likelihood of less than 10 forward passes total in each game. No reason to think that GaSo or App couldn't compete with those programs.

The difference is that we will be in our FBS transitional year and Ga St will be in their first year as a full FBS team. Not saying we won't buy it out, however, being a transitional team playing @ a FCS team will be looked at differently. I haven't heard of any official SBC policy but I'd imagine that it's extremely frowned upon.

I may be in the minority, but I'd like to avoid more than one BCS program on our 2014 schedule.

We may have 85 scholarships, but a larger percentage of them will be freshman than a typical year. The SB games alone will be tough on us, no need to go gang busters in year 1.

I believe the SB will use a 9 conference game schedule based upon Benson interviews. I believe we will buy out the McNeese game.

So far we have 9 Sun Belt games and Michigan in 2014. I believe we will add an FCS home game and then sign a CUSA or AAC member to a home and home.

Would you guys perfer an 8 or 9 game Sun Belt schedule? 8 games would likely reduce travel so I'd prefer 8.

I'm excited just talking about this.

How is that any different than GSU playing Wofford or Citadel now?

I'm torn on the 8 vs 9 game schedule. Having a 9th game would guarantee us a 5th conference home game every other year, but it would also limit us on dates for non-conference games plus the added travel. With an 8 game schedule we could have 2 games against the "BCS" teams, and 2 against teams from the AAC, MWC, MAC, and CUSA. In a perfect world we would have 1 non-conference game that rotates between AAC, MWC, MAC, and CUSA schools, and then another set aside for a yearly rivalry game against either ECU, Marshall, or UNCC.

If it went to 9 would we still try for 2 "BCS" teams a year to get higher payouts, or would we just go for 1 and try to play 2 games against Group of 5 teams?

Georgia Southern must be planning on an 8 game SB schedule since they are scheduling 4 OC games: GT, Navy, NC State and Duquene.

The difference is GSU vs Citadel is the most boring game nobody knows about. GSU vs Navy would be the most boring game that some people would at least know about. I do see the interest in playing Ga Tech from a GSU perspective due to Paul Johnson and all.

Dang it! So much for that every other year trip to The Beacon. That is about enough time for the cholesterol to clear from my blood so I could dive into another Chili Cheese A Plenty and sweet iced tea, with lemon of course!

JT with 9 SB games that would limit us to one BCS payout game. I agree I think 8 games works best. We'd likely play 2 BCS games every 3-4 years depending on scheduling. First priority should be 6 home games a year even if that means an FCS team every other year.
