Eric Breitenstein

Eric Breitenstein didn't even get a UDFA offer. I think he should have at least gotten a chance somewhere. He had 5,730 career yards (more than Brad Hoover had at Western {3, 616} and Hoover was a UDFA). Problem is, how many scouts saw him play at Wofford on a consistent basis. Scouts don't pack games like they do at App. He got limited chances to be seen. Too bad. Hope he gets a chance to catch on somewhere.
The quote below is taken from the first paragraph of a Watauga Democrat article.
"Eric Breitenstein's dream of making it on to a roster is still alive. It will just be more difficult to achieve.
Breitenstein was not selected in the NFL Draft nor was he offered a free agent contract. Instead, he was offered a tryout with the Carolina Panthers."
Our buddy Lincoln Stewart should pay attention to this.

Breitenstein not offered a contract
by Steve Behr Sports Editor
Eric Breitenstein's dream of making it on to a roster is still alive. It will just be more difficult to achieve.
Breitenstein was not selected in the NFL Draft nor was he offered a free agent contract. Instead, he was offered a tryout with the Carolina Panthers.
That tryout is May 9.
Breitenstein has some familiarity with the Panthers since the team's training camp facility is at Wofford College, where Breitenstein played his college football. He's disappointed in not being signed on Saturday, but he's also determined to work hard to prepare for his tryout.
"It's been a real long day," Breitenstein said. "At the end of the day, I still have a shot. Now I have to go out and prove it. I thought I had done enough to get an opportunity. In the end, I still have an opportunity. I've just got to go and work harder."
Breitenstein is the two-time Southern Conference Offensive Most Valuable Player. He gained 2,035 yards and scored 19 touchdowns for Wofford in 2012.
He was also an all-state defensive back and all-state running back at Watauga in his junior and senior seasons.
Breitenstein, who stands 5-foot-11 and weighs 230 pounds, said he watched the final four rounds of the draft Saturday, which began at noon and ended at 7:30 p.m.
"Since 12 (p.m.) today I sat in front of a television watching people be happy," he said. "It's kind of like when I came out of high school. I thought I'd go to a big Division I (program), but it all worked out in the end when I ended up at Wofford. I'm disappointed now, but it's all going to work out the way it's supposed to."

If anything happened after this was printed I haven't seen it yet. I know there was a post showing a tweet from Coach Cardwell 20 hours ago saying that the Panthers picked him up but I can't find anything else about it. The story seems pretty certain, even giving a date for a tryout. The Panthers will release the official UDFA list on Monday.

I saw that blog from Person after I posted the Democrat story. Since Person replaced Gantt as the Panthers beat writer he's not been the best source of info. I trust what I pick up on Cat Scratch Reader over Person most of the time. I did e-mail Steve Behr and asked him if had any update on Eric's status since the Cardwell tweet. I'll post what he says and we'll see when the official list comes out tomorrow. Could be they weren't going to offer him but someone they offered decided not to sign so they might have decided to offer him after the Democrat story was written.
I guess my original point still applies no matter what happens. A guy with nearly 6,000 yards from App, most of those in just three seasons, would have garnered more attention due to the number of scouts that attend App games. I guess that's one of the reasons he came here for our Pro Day.

It really hurt him that he played in a T-bone, wishbone, hell what ever you call it, NFL teams probably think he is too far behind the curve to learn how to play in a NFL offense. If he wants to make a roster he had better become a great special teams player, and learn how to block as a fullback.

Chisolm actually got an invite to the Redskins rookie camp which is the same thing Breitenstein got his is just with the Panthers.

My mistake. Guess I had misinterpreted Chisholm's opportunity as an UDFA signing.

The stuff about scouts not seeing him at WoCo may be thoroughly accurate, but let's also keep in mind that RB is a devalued position in the NFL currently. A few years ago, a guy of Lacy's talent wouldn't have dropped. Add to that the Breitenstein is probably being looked at as a FB, which is even more devalued. Best of luck to him with his tryouts with the Panthers, that's a crowded backfield, especially with them drafting a RB.

I just don't see how he wouldnt be a good back ala Tolbert. I can't see Chisolm making it though.
