Interesting observation

Unread post by scatman77 » Sat Dec 24, 2016 8:34 am

I will include myself in this observation as well, but I find it quite interesting how we are so concerned and interested in the ongoing soap opera on Franklin Street but yet the third Grayson Allen tripping incident has yet to be mentioned.

Disclaimer: I watch Duke athletics because I have an very good friend (from 4th grade) who is an alum and also comes with us to App games. He wears the black and gold very well. In return I and others are with him and his Blue Devils.

Grayson has an issue he has to deal with and I'm sure K and Duke will help him all they can - he didn't drive someone into the backboard stanchion or slug a player in the privates - his actions were intentional and stupid --- I feel for him in the fact that he has been publically humiliated - yes, he brought it on himself but if he weren't white and at Duke this would receive very little press, however because he is at Duke he will get help and put this behind him before it costs him dearly --- I really don't think you were meaning to equate the two?

While I completely get what you're saying, I think the reason many of us at Appalachian (and around the state in general) are concerned with what is happening at UNC-Chapel Hill is because that school is the flagship university of the UNC System. UNC is favored by the Board of Governors, putting the rest of the UNC System schools at a big disadvantage. Out of the 32 Board of Governors, 12 of them are alumni of UNC-Chapel Hill. No other school in the UNC System has more than 4 of their alums on the Board of Governors. NC State has 4, ECU has 4, and App has 3. Other schools, like UNCW and UNCSA, have no representation at all.

The bias towards UNC-Chapel Hill in this state is without question. It is very clear and evident to everybody in the UNC System, the ACC, the NCAA, the North Carolina government, and everywhere else. People have the right to be mad that our flagship university has cheated for years now, yet they are getting away with it without even a slap on the wrist.

Yeah, Grayson Allen messed up at Duke and he should he held accountable for it. I don't think much has been said about it on here, though, because 1. most App fans aren't basketball-centric; 2. Duke does not represent the UNC System or North Carolina as a whole; 3. Duke does not share a budget with Appalachian the way UNC-Chapel Hill does; and 4. it's bowl season, meaning most fans are watching what's going on on the field more so than the court.

Coach K suspended Grayson Allen. What more do you want? I'm a huge Duke basketball fan, and am probably more happy about the suspension than a hating UNC fan. Allen's actions are inexcusable, and Coack K handled it correctly. How long indefinitely will be is unknown, and regardless there will be people who think it's long enough or not long enough. I think it speaks volumes about Coach K that his program is never under investigation by the NCAA or dealing with what UNC is accused of doing.

UNC's issue is much greater than a 21 year old who has Draymond Green type moments.

Tripping a player versus 10+ years of academic fraud. Pretty simple.

Most of the people who hate UNC don't hate Duke.

The interesting thing to me is that I'm not sure it's going to be that easy for K and his staff to "help" Allen, whatever that means. I'm sure they don't want him tripping people. But Duke has trained their players for years in various little tricks - the leg kick when jump shooting, jumping sideways into an airborne defender, shoving a player in the lower back just as he jumps for a rebound, and of course the infamous flopping. I don't know how you teach all that and then take a hard line on tripping. Guess we'll see.

I think the main reason is because it happened against (F)elon...we don't give a damn about Elon on this board! Cheap shot artist in their own right on the football field.

Everything you mentioned with the exception of tripping is how basketball is today. Just like diving is a part of soccer. Not sure K was the one to start, but Duke players aren't the only to do it. Tripping is outside of the how basketball is today. I think that's why he can separate the two. You're right though, we'll have to wait and see how he handles it. I am optimistic in thinking he returns before the meat of the conference schedule.

I can't speak for anyone else, but the Allen incident(s) got far more attention on social media than the UNCheat NOI. Of course, maybe UNC getting another NOI isn't really 'news.' I mean, Christmas happens every year too.

This is a very good point. Also, with Duke it was a one person thing and he was removed. With UNC, it was the entire school.

I take it personally to the fact that we had probation simply for the fact that some of our guys just weren't making the grades!!! They can not even go to class and still haven't had a slap on the wrist.

10+ years of academic fraud with virtually no repercussions vs 1 player with a discipline problem that was removed from the team. Plus, Allen has received way more media attention than the fraud at UNC.

No, did not mean to imply that. I was observing that IMO we here on this board are obsessed with unc-cheat but our lack of discussion of Grayson Allen is glaring. Granted his antics are not nearly as egregious as the Franklin Street Mob but nevertheless it is news.

I watched a commentary this morning and I agreed with it: Allen is not a bad person nor is he a villain. He's a young man (talented basketball player too) who needs some guidance and discipline, and to be taught to leave all those emotions in the locker room.

The mistakes of 1 student athlete, vs. decades of systematic cheating that involves nearly all sports at an entire school is the difference.
Besides, Grayson Allen has already been punished more that UNC.
