UNC-CH's issues are related to independent study classes in AFAM History that were apparently less than stringent, plus accusations of funneling student athletes to these particular classes "taught" by the head of the department. Actually, he was a product of a Memphis high school as well...so you were correct too!
Here is an interesting, very sad but at the same time a bit inspiring, article about the young man. No doubt he bears the responsibility for his life choices, including avoiding responsibility for learning how to read at an earlier age and fathering multiple children with different women .... at the same time, no less! However, the school system that passed him through to graduation shares blame as well.
