NO EFFIN' WAY!!

The crowd of 30k with three fingers up strikes fear into the hearts of our opponents and is one of our best traditions. The only time the hand should be taken down is if they're banging on the aluminum seat in front of them or cupping their hands around their mouth. Clapping doesn't add much noise.
I hope these are jokes.
Nope. Clapping adds 0 noise.
Audible clapping makes 0 noise. Yes, seems totally logical.

When I scream and clap at the same time, I'll guarantee you I'm louder than someone screaming and holding up 3 fingers.
Remember those terrible thunder sticks? The students were too busy banging them together to remember to yell.

Fingets up and voices loud. That's why we have one of (if not the) loudest outdoor sports venues in North Carolina.

 Looks real scary too...a bunch of quiet people holding up three fingers like we're saluting Dale!
Quiet people?

That might not be because of the screaming... :D

Have to agree with you. clapping + yelling = more noise than holding 3 fingers up and yelling. Plus I've seen way too many people simply holding up 3 fingers and not yelling or making any noise.

If you're one that doesn't normally yell, place some coins in a bottle and shake it like a polaroid picture. Does the Sun Belt have a conference rule against "artificial" noisemakers? Bring on the cowbells!!!

Not an insult at all, I'm saying it's like we stole the Dale salute.

Cool video. Nope, section 205 yelling and clapping. You've clearly never sat in the alumni (non-student) sections where there's a bunch of people that just throw up three fingers and stand there.

I'm still trying to figure out how clapping and yelling makes less noise than holding up three fingers and yelling...

I have and I've seen it. I also know of certain alum sections that are just as loud as the students some times. That's just the way older people are I suppose. If the norm changed to clap and yell, I'm sure those same people would just sit there.

I was perplexed by the phenomenon at first, but thunder stick games being so tame and quiet are the proof in the puddin'. Overstimulation maybe? ADD? Lack of multi tasking ability? Who knows.

Either way, that tradition is ingrained in the culture of the Appalachian gameday experience. No way we lose that one.

 Who is talking about thunder sticks? Of course thunder sticks are stupid, and I guess some students decided to use those rather than yell...it's called lazy. It is impossible for yelling/Dale salute to be louder than yelling/clapping. It's science.

The Dale salute is a "tradition" that I do not participate in. It is a new tradition, not much older than the new UNCC traditions, and it's a tradition that I couldn't care less about. I always liked Dale Sr., but I keep my racing and football separated.

How can you not see the similarities in clapping your hands together and clapping thundersticks together? It's the exact same action.

Because it's a stupid comparison. It is an impossibility that you would be louder yelling while holding three fingers in the air vs. yelling while clapping. C'mon Gonz...it's science.

You're operating under the assumption that the amount of noise generated by the person's mouth is the same when they're clapping as when they're holding up the three fingers. I'm saying the more the person is doing physically, the less volume their voice will produce. (not necessarily though, I'm among the group that jumps up and down while I yell and hold up three fingers) The example I used was thundersticks, which require the exact same amount of concentration and exertion clapping does.

Also, there's something about the mass of people doing the same thing with their hands that gets people's attention. Not just opposing players ect, but folks that may not have been yelling in the first place. They hear the bells, they see the hands go up and they join in on the noise.

This has gotten WAY to technical

Agreed. That's the beauty of choice. I hate the Dale salute in football, so I will continue to yell and clap. I'm confident I can hold my own in a battle of loudness, ask Veg. I am quite the big mouth!

As long as we don't start the "key play" crap, I'm happy.

I'm with you man. Witnessing some huge playoff games, and big third down stops, over the past few years I'll take the peeps screaming, clapping, banging on seats any day over holding up three fingers and making an "Ooooooooooooh" sound with the mouth.
