- No more "three fingers up" on third down. Clapping your frozen hands not only warms them up, it's MUCH MUCH louder. I hate when we started doing this a few years ago.

Remember those terrible thunder sticks? The students were too busy banging them together to remember to yell.

Have to agree with you. clapping + yelling = more noise than holding 3 fingers up and yelling. Plus I've seen way too many people simply holding up 3 fingers and not yelling or making any noise.

I'd like for the crowd to yell "Oooooooooo....Welcome to the Rock!" as the kicker kicks off. (only for the first kick off of the game) For every other kickoff throughout the game, the crowd should yell out "hot, hot, hot" as the kicker booms the ball.

If you're one that doesn't normally yell, place some coins in a bottle and shake it like a polaroid picture. Does the Sun Belt have a conference rule against "artificial" noisemakers? Bring on the cowbells!!!

I have and I've seen it. I also know of certain alum sections that are just as loud as the students some times. That's just the way older people are I suppose. If the norm changed to clap and yell, I'm sure those same people would just sit there.

I'm still trying to figure out how clapping and yelling makes less noise than holding up three fingers and yelling...

I was perplexed by the phenomenon at first, but thunder stick games being so tame and quiet are the proof in the puddin'. Overstimulation maybe? ADD? Lack of multi tasking ability? Who knows.

Either way, that tradition is ingrained in the culture of the Appalachian gameday experience. No way we lose that one.

(not necessarily though, I'm among the group that jumps up and down while I yell and hold up three fingers) The example I used was thundersticks, which require the exact same amount of concentration and exertion clapping does.

Also, there's something about the mass of people doing the same thing with their hands that gets people's attention. Not just opposing players ect, but folks that may not have been yelling in the first place. They hear the bells, they see the hands go up and they join in on the noise.

Agreed. That's the beauty of choice. I hate the Dale salute in football, so I will continue to yell and clap. I'm confident I can hold my own in a battle of loudness, ask Veg. I am quite the big mouth!

I'm with you man. Witnessing some huge playoff games, and big third down stops, over the past few years I'll take the peeps screaming, clapping, banging on seats any day over holding up three fingers and making an "Ooooooooooooh" sound with the mouth.
