If a team is really that good, they should be able to win their conference. That is the only way to make it fair and guarantee the best teams are in the playoffs. Anything less is just a beauty contest. You will never have the very best teams in the playoffs until you do, because some conferences are sleeping with the judges.
1000%. In football, if not good enough to win your conference not good enough to win Natty.

That is usually the case but when the playoffs expanded it means things like that are more likely to happen. More than 4-8 teams just dilutes the playoffs in my opinion. Ohio State won the title last year but did not win the Big Ten. Illinois State is playing for the FCS title and did not even finish top 3 in the MVFC. Expanding the playoffs does not fix anything except it makes the TV networks and leagues more money. It actually just makes optics worse due to things like that happening, more arguments over who is #12 or #16 as opposed to top 5, etc.

On one level I agree, but on the other hand, there are numerous examples of a team being conference runner up but winning the Natty. In our own case, we never came in #2 but we did share a conference title and still win the National Championship back in our FCS days. I do think all the talk about identifying the 12 "best" teams for the playoff is misguided. The purpose of a playoff is to have teams that played dissimilar schedules play to settle it on the field. That's why conference representation is important and why all teams in the league should have a path available. I do think the SEC is by far the strongest conference top to bottom with the B1G being the only real contender. I still don't think a team that comes in 5th in the conference needs to have a shot at the National Championship. That just seems ridiculous to me. Problem is that has been the situation in basketball for a long time, so people are used to it.

One thing the NCAA and college football need to worry about....the conference games are really not important anymore. I like waht the sunbelt dod wirh our basketball tournament.....it made the conference games matter. The SEC is going to cause their conference football games to not matter. The ACC had 12 teams that the last 5 conference games made no matter. 16 team conferences was the worst idea ever amd then taking the two highest rated out of a 16 conference was even a worst decision.
