Eagle22 wrote:I guess my point is fretting over the differences (on paper) about these comparative classes is a near exercise in futility. Sure it gives us something to talk about and discuss, but the proof of the quality of these classes will not be determined for certain until the 2020-2021 seasons are done. I hope to be alive then to see how they pan out !

We have a big class this year because Fritz didn't go full out last year filling the class .... in part because we missed getting some guys and had late flips (UGA poached a RB recruit, we lost a recruit to App who ultimately flipped again to IU, etc). We have to get some quality players just to expect to compete in the Sun Belt. We both know what we were dealing with in the SoCon, and it is clear that we had talent to win 1-off games vs. G5 and weaker P5 teams, but quality depth is needed to win the Sun Belt league and compete against the stronger P5 teams we face.

We have, on paper, our strongest class in sometime. But guess what, ironically we might end up very weak in QB .. especially if Werts gets offered at South Carolina this weekend. Then our class has a pretty big hole in it, and for our team's composition that could end up being a problem spot. We historically have been very good at the QB position, so don't think it is all roses for us .... you can feel sorry for us if you care to ;)

App has done a very good job this year in getting some quality QB talent, DESPITE the fact you have an entrenched starter that is not only talented ... but has 2 years left to play. We have 2 4th year seniors who look to split 2016 time, and yet we lost our primary QB recruit with Fritz flipping him, and as previously mentioned our other QB recruit Werts is precariously close to a USC offer.
Quick question Eagle 22. Can any of the recruits from the state of Ga that have strong academic records use hope scholarships thus opening up more slots? I realize the hope now doesn't cover everything but is that even an option or a to cover recruited walk ons??

Also must mention that GA is loaded with football talent and GS in no doubt the #3 option and in some cases (can't qualify for GaTech) the #2 in state option for players. With their tradition they will get their share of these.

Fritz definitely hasn't done GaSo any recruiting favors. One of the recruits even posted a picture of his Tulane offer. The mentions of "commitment" and "loyalty" with the Fritz signature at the bottom of the page were laughable.

There are two levels of the Hope Scholarship. Hope pays for tuition only (95%) ... which means about $2200 in credit each semester. The second level is if you have a 1200 SAT w 3.5gpa equivalent score, known as a Zell Miller scholarship ... it is administered under the Hope Scholarship program and it adds more money in stipends for books. You have to maintain a 3.0 GPA for Hope (checkpoints annually) and a 3.5 GPA for the Zell Miller scholarship.

My son, a freshmen at Georgia Southern, has to stay in the dorm (freshman requirement unless you live in a close radius to the school). The additional costs add about $4000+ for housing per semester, and $1750 minimum per semester for mandatory meal plan.

So a full ride is around $16,000 for the scholarship athlete. A walk-on with Hope will still have to fund between $10K to $11K to attend. Second year costs will drop by a couple thousand, because off-campus housing is plentiful, new and cost efficient and there is not a mandatory meal plan. So it helps if we have a PWO who is a good student, that wants to walk on... if they aren't offered a full ride at a FCS program. Mercer, which is private ... can offer the same kid with that academic scoring a discount on their tuition, but to live OFF-CAMPUS that cost still would be $17K out of pocket. So that is where Hope helps out.

Our main opportunity versus GaTech in recruiting, is in the majors we offer. There are going to be kids they are interested in athletically, but maybe can't place in a major of their interest. Still think every GaTech graduate has to take calculus, and I'm sure that scares off a couple ;)

There are some obvious differences in the student populations, but we have made significant strides over the past decade in elevating the quality of entering students. We have become more selective each year, with planned growth of adding about 500 students per year until 2025, with the goal to be around 25,000 students by then as we continue to raise entrance standards. This is happening in the face of declining enrollments in many Georgia universities (us, UGA, GaState and Kennessaw State are the main exceptions)

This has been said before, Armanti had Zero stars, won two NC's and two Peyton Awards. We had a **** WR transfer in who didn't crack the starting rotation even after he recovered from injury. I dont, therefore, take recruiting grades seriously.

The games are played on the field with players who want badly enough to be there.

Thanks for addressing the Hope Scholarship issue. It would appear it isn't much of a factor as far as attracting athletes.

E22 is responding in a thread about his program. As you stated, he's been "polite and articulate" so I don't see what the problem is especially when E22 was asked a question. App fans, a few in which we hold in high regard here at YC, post over on the flight line from time to time.

I get some of our fans hate all that is GS but the simple solution is to not click on a thread with GS in the title. I for one, appreciate other fans visiting the Cabin to give us some insight.

Paranoid much

I've been a member of the MMB since it's inception ... and best I can tell, the Mountaineer recruiting classes haven't suffered as a result.

I'm almost 50 years old, and in one instance in the last 30 years have I sent a prospect's name to Georgia Southern coaches. The kid was someone I coached for 10 years in little league baseball, and he signed this past year with WKU (offensive line). My main goal was ensuring he'd get a D1 scholarship somewhere, because he was good enough to warrant a full ride and his family's financial situation was such that it was the only way he was going to get to go to college.

The coaches know who they want, they don't usually need fans pointing them out. Some of the offers given are no doubt due to the 'herd frenzy' that is recruiting, but like I mentioned earlier in the thread .... effective recruiting is more about fit ... all these kids are talented at this level.

If you have a recruit that no one else is interested in, do you really think in this day and age that they are undiscovered talent ? I'd suggest there is a greater chance that your evaluation of the recruit is suspect.

In other words, be glad that your recruits have attracted attention of other programs that are at/on/above your level. It would sure be worse if you had Furman or Gardner Webb cherry picking your recruits.

This right here!

We're all die hards, but if you think your posts on a message board make you some kind of a freelance volunteer recruiting assistant you've been puffing on something. They have professionals that do this. I HIGHLY doubt any coach anywhere is going to opposing message boards for inside tips.

You guys are missing the point of my comments entirely. Comments we make are read by others....we get that... we welcome your insight and comments, but some of my fellow Apps will make a negative comment about a recruit or on occasion give some bulletin board material for a schools' recruiter to use in their efforts to poach or sway a prospect. If you dont think a coach has used what has been said on this board in the past ....or a recruit has not read what has been said here ....well my comments are just be careful what you say.

Just did a quick count of recruits App offered that have verbally committed to GS and vice versa. The results 6 for each.

Until I see those numbers more in there favor and more importantly winning four of the last five I feel pretty good about our recruiting classes.

Both programs are getting quality depth now and it should show in a year or so.

I can agree with that. I grimace at things said about recruits on my board and likewise try to 'police' that. What firemoose (who I don't know, btw) does is admirable, it is a time consuming labor of love when you spend that much time delving into the minutiae of recruiting.

I was just having a little fun, btw. I know you aren't paranoid .. nothing wrong with a cautious approach. We try to handle the recruiting discussion that way on my board as well.

I like DBAD; we need to add DBAM: Don't Be a Moron!
Some of the comments on this board extend well-beyond ignorance.

Thank you for taking a light hearted joke and assuming it was confrontational. It wasn't about you (or anyone specifically). It was actually about grown men not bad mouthing 17 year old recruits (ie, being a d*ck) on a message board.

In the sincerest, most assuredly non confrontational or sarcastic way, have a nice day!
